Aim of the Course

The aim of the course is to provide students with knowledge necessary to identify and prepare a crude drug from the farm to the firm. Students should acquire knowledge concerning Dusting Powders, plant cytology, physiology and medicinal leafy plants.

  • General introduction ( crude drug. origin, natural products) and cultivation
  • Collection
  • Drying and packing
  • Preservation and adulteration
  • Secondary plant metabolites
  • Cytology and water relations
  • Plant physiology(photosynthesis, respiration and dormancy)
  • Taxonomy (introduction)
  • Thallophyta and gymnosperms
  • Angiosperms
  • Explanation and handling of microscope
  • Examination of different starches (potato, wheat, maize, rice)
  • Different dusting powders (kieselguhr, talc, kaolin, bentonite, sulphur, chalk)
  • Introduction of drugs composed of leaves
  • Senna
  • Digitalis
  • Henna
  • Solanaceous leaves
  • Other leaves
